by Bob Pearce at Fred Taylor Park Waitakere United captain Jake Butler had a day of highs Fisher, often the forgotten man of an increasingly lethal outfit, scored two of the goals but he also missed a penalty. Hawke's Bay came into the game minus six of their regular starters and Waitakere took the opportunity to omit player-coach Neil Emblen and striker Brent Fisher from the starting lineup, giving the very promising Ryan De Vries his first full game. It took almost half an hour for the home team to open the scoring but when they got under way, they enjoyed a 10-minute goal rush. In the 29th minute Allan Pearce, who had one of his best games of the season, made ground on the left and Roy Krishna provided the finishing touch, seven minutes later Butler benefited from a Krishna run and a couple of minutes later the captain made it 3-0 from a Pearce delivery. Three goals up at the break, Waitakere looked poised for a goal fest but the Bay battled bravely in the second spell despite going a man down in the 60th minute. Krishna was brought down by goalkeeper Richard Gillespie and referee Peter O'Leary signalled red card and penalty. Reserve keeper Shaun Peta came on in place of Willie Stanger and produced an excellent diving save to deny Butler a hat-trick. The Bay got one goal back in the 86th minute when Andrew Abba went on a solo raid through a static defence and slotted a perfect goal past Danny Robinson, who had been hardly troubled at any stage earlier. The scoring was completed two minutes into time added on when Fisher, a late-game sub, cleverly put another substitute, Dakota Lucas, through to make it 4-1. Hawke's Bay coach Matt Chandler was proud of the way his makeshift team had performed, particularly in the second half. "Six of our regulars were not playing and I thought the boys were outstanding, particularly in the second half," he said. "I thought we matched Waitakere, except for a 15-minute period when they were brilliant and showed their class. "I was very disappointed about the red card. I thought it could have been a yellow. We've been targeting our last two games at home and now we'll be without our goalkeeper. Still it was a great save of Shaun's from the penalty." Emblen, who had the luxury of watching a full game from the bench, was satisfied with the way his team played. "I thought we totally controlled the first half and then perhaps had too much time when we were against 10 men. We wanted to give Fish a rest but he made a difference when he came on and set up the fourth goal. "Ryan played well in his first 90 minutes. We've now scored three, four, four and four goals in our last four games at home." Next week Waitakere head to Tahiti to play AS Manu Ura in a 2010 O-League match. Hawke's Bay play Canterbury at Park Island next Saturday 6 March, kick-off 12pm. |
