by Bob Pearce at Kiwitea Street Auckland City soared to the top of the NZFC after beating After a scoreless first half, the home team made up for a series of missed chances with some clinical finishing as the Southerners wilted in the northern heat and humidity. Seven minutes into the half a poor headed clearance from a corner fell to Matt Williams and he made no mistake, giving goalie James Waggett no chance. The second in the 75th minute was all down to Auckland. James Pritchett combined cleverly and laid on a chance for Daniel Koprivcic, who atoned for a couple of earlier misses. From then on it was all Auckland and they seemed to be lining up to score. Grant Young, who had come on as a substitute, had one of the misses of the season when he was clear through with the goal at his mercy. But in the 77th minute he made amends after Ki-Hyung Lee had played a clever exchange with Koprivcic to set him up. By now Otago were down to walking pace in the heat and humidity and in the 84th minute, substitute Riki Van Steeden was brought down in the penalty area and another substitute, Paul Urlovic, scored from the spot.
Auckland coach Paul Posa was delighted with his team's performance after a lacklustre effort against Hawke's Bay the previous week. "We could have had three or four in the first half but I was very happy a halftime because I knew the goals would come," he said. "As a 90-minute performance this was the best of the year. "Everybody contributed but I thought Ki, McGeorge and Williams in the midfield were superb. "I can understand how Otago feel. At halftime our players thought they were struggling with the heat and the travel. We found the travel tough when we were held to a draw down there." Otago coach Malcolm Fleming was deflated by the margin "We started badly but I thought we clawed our way into the game. But then we made a soft header from defence and Matt Williams capitalised and they were on a roll. "It was really hot out there. Auckland have played in the heat recently but we haven't and the players were dead on their feet in the second half. "I thought Tom Sadd played well for us in defence and James Waggett in goal kept us in the game for a long time as he has done all season." Auckland City play their third game in a row at home next Sunday against Wellington, who they beat at Newtown late last year before they headed to the FIFA Club World Cup. Since then the Capital side have been on something of a roll after a slow start to the season. |
