A combination of great defending, team Photo: SHane Wenzlick www.phototek.co.nzattitude and some contentious refereeing have handed YoungHeart Manawatu a 3-2 upset win over Waitakere United in Palmerston North today.

Adam Cowen’s injury time winner capped a spirited comeback from 0-2 down and included two goals from Gouzalo Nieres – the second a penalty for Simon Eaddy’s red card when Waitakere were still leading 2-1.

Players and spectators could see that it was going to be different from other games today, with usual captain Ian Robinson starting from the bench today for YoungHeart.

“We wanted to try something different today,” YoungHeart coach Shane Rufer said when asked about it. “I think it paid off very well.”

Most people would argue otherwise, especially when former YoungHeart striker Benjamin Totori managed to knife his way through the defence to put the ball in the back of the net in the 26th minute.

“He’s quick and can score – that’s why we got him last year,” Rufer said.

However, Totori barely saw any real quality ball for the rest of the half as the young Manawatu back line managed to close him down and keep the gap to one goal at the break.

The first half was not without its drama though. In the 38th minute, Waitakere captain Danny Hay and YoungHeart defender Trent Watson appeared to clash heads in a challenge. But Waitakere coach Chris Milicich saw it differently when asked about it after the match.

“My captain has now got a lump for an eye from when Watson elbowed him in the head in the first half,” Milicich said.

“How the referee didn’t send him off when he was already on a yellow card is beyond me.”

The second half started with YoungHeart on the attack early and striker Gouzalo Nieres a chance on goal on the second minute that should have been finished.

However, it was Waitakere substitute Daniel Koprivcic that scored first after the break, playing a handy one-two with Neil Sykes to get in position to put the ball past YoungHeart goalkeeper Andrew Bailey in the 61st minute.

It seems that this goal sparked 19-year-old Bailey into action in his first start at home to compile an amazing second-half performance between the posts.

“I’ve been looking forward to this all week,” he said. “I enjoyed it and I’m happy to get a chance at this level.”

The next phase of the half was dominated by fantastic work from Bailey until a controversial moment in the 70th minute, when YoungHeart striker Dominic Rowe was brought down in the box by Waitakere goalkeeper Simon Eaddy.

Referee Antony Riley awarded YoungHeart a penalty – which Nieres converted - and also sent off Eaddy. By this stage, Waitakere had used all three of their substitutes and were forced to hand outfield player Darren Bazeley the gloves.

“We were well in control and then the ref makes a shocking call that hands the opposition the game,” coach Milicich said.

“It was negligent, disgraceful and I’m left horrified at the refereeing performance today.”

With YoungHeart then having the advantage of an extra man, it took them no time in dominating the game. They finally manage to steal the win in extra time when crowd favourite Adam Cowan powered home a header.

YoungHeart coach Shane Rufer was very happy with his team’s performance today.

“We had desire today. You shouldn’t need it for these big games but it hasn’t always been there lately,” Rufer said.

“Today also showed that it doesn’t matter which league or which placing in the table you are. If you have the right attitude, you can win.”

Waitakere coach Chris Milicich, however, was left ruing the performance of his team and the referee.

“We didn’t play well today and they did,” he said.

“However, it should have been us today. Two horrific calls from the referee gave the game away today."
