Waitakere compound Canterbury troubles

The game started at a hectic pace with all the goals coming in the first 26 minutes.

Waitakere opened the scoring in just the second minute when Welsh import Chris Bale scored.

Waitakere’s captain Danny Hay was allowed too much room when he headed home to double the lead after 15 minutes but Canterbury hit back immediately.

Ryan Faichnie – making his NZFC debut – found Dave Walker in space, with the Waitakere bench looking for an offside flag. Walker squared the ball to unmarked Blair Scoullar to score.

Ten minutes later Allan Pearce* got what proved to be the final goal, meeting a cross from Darren Bazeley.

The home side lost goal-scorer Scoullar with a calf injury just before the break but showed more fight in the second half. Their cause was not helped however, when vice captain Andy Pitman received a red card for a studs-up challenge after 72 minutes.

To compound their troubles, Canterbury also lost defender Bill Robertson late in the game after a head clash.

“We are restricting sides to next to nothing”, added Milicich when talking about the defensive work.

Canterbury coach, Danny Halligan felt his side had “showed them too much respect early on” but was pleased with his side’s second half performance.

The Dragons now find themselves in a battle at the bottom of the table along with Manawatu, Otago and Waikato who they face at home in the next round in a ‘six pointer’. With Pitman already sidelined for the game the Canterbury management will be waiting with baited breath on the medical update on the condition of both Scoullar and Robertson.

*Initally the goal had been credited to Benjamin Totori but official match reports revealed it the goal had been credited to Pearce.
