Dragons end Waitakere unbeaten run

by Bob Pearce at Fred Taylor Park

WHENUAPAI - Canterbury United gave their playoff confidence a huge boost when they beat minor champions Waitakere United 3-2 at Fred Taylor Park.
The southerners host Auckland City next weekend in the semis while a chastened Waitakere, who were gunning for an unbeaten season, head for Hawkes Bay.
Canterbury, who have enjoyed more success than most at The Fred, were never behind from the time referee Nick Waldron saw a push in the box at a corner in the 19th minute and Aaron Clapham added another to his impressive penalty strike rate.
Waitakere had a penalty of their own within sight of halftime but Allan Pearce’s shot was parried by Adam Highfield, who also blocked the follow-up. Still the home team were level before the break when Milos Nikolic, who had come on as a substitute for the injured Adam Scott, was the man on the spot when a Jake Butler shot rebounded after a corner.
West Auckland supporters were waiting for the real Waitakere to strut their stuff in the second half but several of the players seemed to have left their A game behind for the early kickoff.
No such problems for Canterbury.

Russell Kamo needs no second invitation to score and when the Waitakere defence went to sleep in the 59th minute he was quick to capitalise. A few minutes later the home team lost another of their staunch defenders when Brian Shelley departed after a head knock.
And then his replacement Daniel Jones was given his marching orders by the ref with a straight red for a reckless tackle in the 84th minute.

As the entertaining contest lurched into time added on, Kamo again sundered a somnambulant defence to make it 3-1 and apparently seal the win.
But there was still timefor a bizarre Waitakere second when Louie Bush had the misfortune to deflect an innocuous cross past Highfield as the goalie was ready to field the ball.
“Playoffs here we come” was the cry from Canterbury coach Keith Braithwaite as he congratulated his players after the final whistle.
“It was a good game,” he said. “They had chances and we had chances. We wanted to play our normal game and it was a good team effort. Ashley Wellbourn gave us another option up front and we were more secure defensively. Adam Highfield also made a couple of good saves.

“Now we’ll prepare ourselves for Auckland City next weekend and that will be just as tough.”
Waitakere coach Paul Marshall was disappointed to see an unbeaten record lost and he was not impressed by the way his team played.
“It was harder than I thought to get the boys up for this one,” he said. “This is a good wakeup call for us.
“Not one of our players would rate above six out of 10 and you’ve got to do better than that. Comparing this with last week was like chalk and cheese.”
Marshall will have Roy Krishna and possibly Daniel Morgan back from injury next week. Some of those who played today should be nervous about their places.
