Dragons' surge toward playoffs

CHRISTCHURCH - Canterbury United maintained their surge towards the play-offs with a 4-0 win over a dogged Waikato FC in Christchurch today.

The red and blacks victory could have been greater, but for some wayward finishing and a gutsy visiting opponent, who refused to give up.

It took the Dragons 41 minutes to break the Waikato resistance, following a pin-ball sequence of events inside the visitors box. It finished with Waikato keeper Mouncher parrying a Darren White shot,  straight to the feet of Aaron Clapham, who from around 6 yards out, slotted home.

Then after the interval, Canterbury were awarded a penalty after what appeared an innocuous incident involving Mouncher and an onrushing Dragons striker, Ashley Wellbourn.

Captain Aaron Clapham converted, but not with his usual aplomb. The penalty just sneaked in, after hitting the underside of the bar.

Up until this point, the visitors had more than held their own. While the Dragons were wasteful on numerous occasions in  front of goal, Waikato midfielder Sunny Singh missed a gilt-edged chance, pulling his shot wide after finding himself with just Highfield to beat.

Prior to Canterbury going three up, Highfield was very alert, twice saving from Rory Turner and Eder Franchini in as many minutes, as the visitors rallied from going two goals behind.

Dragons striker Russell Kamo, however stepped in with a delightful goal just after the hour mark. Twisting and turning inside the box, he unleashed a wicked dipping shot into the far corner from around 15 yards out.

Kamo then turned provider, picking out Ken Yamamoto inside the box, and the young striker who had been guilty of profligacy before, scored with a quality finish inside the far post.

Ironically, it was Adam Highfield who was involved in the final defining moment of the day, with a brilliant finger tip save over the bar, to deny Waikato sub Jack Hobson-McVeigh, from a direct free-kick, 25 yards out.

To be fair the visitors deserved a goal. But then Highfield was in no mood to oblige, making at least three quality saves during the match.

Dragons coach, Keith Braithwaite was a content man afterwards.  “Overall, a good performance. We scored good goals on another hot Canterbury day,”he said.

Braithwaite acknowledged the visitors determination, and his goalkeepers contribution. But said his strikers needed to be more clinical.
“They (Waikato)defended well in the first half hour, and made things difficult for us. Credit to Waikato, Adam(Highfield) pulled off a couple of good saves. But at the same time we should have done better with our finishing.”

Waikato coach, Mark Cossey was hoarse at the end of the match. He was disappointed with the penalty decision and felt his team deserved more from the game. Still, he conceded that his players wilted in the heat, and that the Dragons were too strong.

“The first half we did very well. We just wanted to carry on what we were doing, but then that penalty so soon after.  To be fair, Canterbury kept pushing and took their chances,”he said.
