Bay one step closer to playoff joy

by David Gearey at Park Island - Napier

NAPIER - Hawke's Bay United took a step closer to an historic playoff after a tempestuous 1-1 draw with title rivals Auckland City today.

In a fiesty encounter, Hawke's Bay and Auckland produced a match packed with intensity and drama that exploded in the second half.
After a dull first 45 minutes that saw  Auckland create the better chances, the second spell revealed two sides hungry for maximum points.
Auckland drew first blood on 57 minutes when Pedro Santa Cecilia Garcia calmly slotted away a well placed shot after good build up and passing between half a dozen team mates inside the Hawke’s Bay box.
First choice referee John Rowbury picked up an injury during the opening spell and had been substituted at halftime by Gareth Sheehan and the new official wasted no time going into his pocket.
Sheehan dished out six second half yellow cards as both sets of players put everything in to the match and left nothing on the field.
The 500 strong Hawke’s Bay crowd were getting treated to a match that emphasised where these two sides sat on the table and with 20 minutes remaining they were given even more to cheer about.
Connor Tinnion who had been relatively quiet for his standards received the ball wide on the left wing.

After jinking past his right back he gained enough space to whip a delightful cross into the box where Jarrod Smith made no mistake with a diving header that left Tamati Williams rooted to the spot.
As the match wore on the Bay began to believe that they could pull off a result, and had it not been for some desperate defending by the visitors then they could have maintained their one hundred percent home record this campaign.
Sheehan kept a watchful eye on matters but not before Cole Peverley and Connor Tinnion had picked up their fourth yellows of the campaign, consequently meaning the duo will be missing for next weekend’s match against Otago.
Chris Greatholder was delighted with his side’s attitude and especially their desire to get something from the game.

The Bay have for the first time gone through the regular season without losing to Auckland City.
“At the hour mark we were 1-0 down and we weren’t playing particular well and it looked as though the game had gone, so we should be pleased with the result,” Greatholder said.
“It’s a little disappointing though as we didn’t play as well as we have done at times this year but in saying that I felt if the match had gone another five minutes, we could have nicked it," he added.
Auckland City Assistant coach Paul Gothard didn’t mince his words when he spoke of the performances of not just both sides but the officials also.
“It’s been a tough week for our side with a few niggles and changes going on, but it’s great to see the likes of David (Browne) starting today and doing well.
“It’s good playing against better sides in the league if we can be honest, and it’s a proper game of football out there and that’s what it felt like," Gothard said.
Hawke’s Bay next week travels south to take on Otago United whilst Auckland City hosts Waitakere United in a top of the table clash.

Welcome to Bluewater Stadium for this Round 10 ASB Premiership match between Hawke's Bay United and Auckland City.  In what is seen as the match of the Round the bay will be without influential fullback Danny WILSON who has flown out to the UK to wed his fiancee Lauren and captain Bill ROBERTSON who serves a one match suspension.

It's a plesant afternoon in Napier today with alot of cloud cover over head which will make the conditions more comftorble for the players.

Kick off is 20 mins away.......

Both sets of players are now lined up in the tunnel and ready to make their way out onto the pitch.  GAME ON !!!!

Hawke's Bay have won the coin toss and will be playing the first half with a slight breeze at their backs.  Auckland to kick off.

Dakota LUCAS in on goal but the referee's assistant has his flag up for offside

Cole PEVERLEY goes in strong with EXPOSITO and the Auckland striker is left rolling around in pain.

First real half chance for the visitors but TADE can't get onto the end of the long ball.

Davis BROWNE shows alot of toe down the right wing but Fergus NEIL does well to halt the speedy winger and the Bay clear the ball away.

Good crowd starting to take their seats now.  Not quite thew 1500 here on Wednesday night but good numbers still the same.

Great feet by Aaron JONES sees Auckland commit the foul and the Bay awarded a free kick 30 yards out.  It's taken quickly and the result has JONES heading in Tamiti WILLIAMS hands for a regulation save.

The home side having a good little spell with the majority of the game spent in Auckland's half.  Not many chances though for either side.

Alex FENERIDIS collects the ball 35 yards out and tries his luck but GILLESPIE claims abeit a small fumble.

Auckland knocking the ball around nicely now and trying to get in behind the Bay but PEVERLEY has been a rock for the home side in these opening 20 minutes as he's cut out numerous attacks for the visitors.

The bay earn the first corner of the match but it's too long and it goes out for a Auckland goal kick.

EXPISITO has a half chance after a nicely worked one two with TADE but he blazes his shot high and wide from a tight angle.

HINDMARCH goes straight over referee John ROWBURY and knocks the big man flat over.  SMASHED EM BRO!!!!

Albert RIERA makes a strong run from the back and has a chance to pull the trigger but decides to cut back onto his right where he gets tackled by 2 desperate Bay defenders.  Good chance for the visitors that.

YELLOW CARD Josh MARGETTS goes into the referees book for a shirt pull on TADE.  The resulting freekick is a well worked one but the home sides defence holds strong and they clear the ball away.

BROWNE again shows his pace as he leaves JONES in his dust before whipping a great ball into the Bay box but EXPOSITO can't quite get his head to it.

Good counter attacking football by Hawke's Bay results in another corner but this one is too close to the keeper and WILLIAMS claims with ease.

YELLOW CARD. Bit of niggly stuff going on now.  Both sides firing up and after Jarrod SMITH is clattered from behind referee ROWBURY puts FENERIDIS into his book.

Auckland earn themselves another freekick but again the quality of the ball in is weak and the ball trickles through to GILLESPIE

The best chance of the game has come and gone.  GILLESPIE shows his class as he saves superbly at EXPOSITO'S feet when the Auckland striker only had the Bay keeper to beat.

The fourth official has indicated a minimum of 2 additional minutes to be played.

HINDMARCH saves the Bay from going down at halftime as he slides in on TADE.  Auckland seem to be trying to dribble the ball in instead of taking a shot when they get the oppertunity.

Halftime here at Bluewater Stadium and the game all still deadlocked.  Auckland have created the better opportunities but havn't taken their chances in front of goal.  The bay have defended well at times but need to be more direct if they want to create chances.

We have just been advised that after HINDMARCH crushed referee ROWBURY in the middle of the park, the official picked up a injury and will now be substituted by the fourth official Gareth SHEEHAN who will be making his ASB Premiership debut in the middle.

Both sides are back out and the second half is about to commence

If the Bay are going to get something out of this game they are going to have to show the same kind of fight they showed on Wednesday night.

SUBSTITUTE AUCKLAND Adam DICKINSON is replacing Manuel EXPOSITO. An early second half substitute for the visitors.  EXPOSITO hasn't seemed to have recovered from a slight hamstring injury which occured when GILLESPIE saved at his feet last in the first half.

YELLOW CARD  Jarrod SMITH in the book after a crunching tacle from behind on Andrew MILNE

TINNION with a couple of half chances but the tricky left winger fails to pull the trigger when a shot may have been the better option.

TADE tries his luck from the edge of the box but his shot fires agonisingly close.

GOAL AUCKLAND CITY  Good composure from the visitors as they knock the ball around the Bay box before Pedro CECILIA calmly strokes the ball into the corner of the net.

YELLOW CARD Aaron Jones in the book for a late challenge on BROWNE

YELLOW CARD  TADE in referee SHEEHAN'S book for a shirt pull on MARGETTS

GOAL HAWKE"S BAY  Jarrod SMITH powers a header home after TINNION whips in a beauty of a cross and the former All White gives WILLIAMS absolutely no chance in the Auckland goal.

The game is firing up big time here.  Both sets of players need to be pulled apart.  The Bay are up for the fight now that they have equalised.

YELLOW CARD  TINNION booked after referee SHEEHAN adjudged the Bay winger to have tackled BROWNE late.  Looked very soft from here.  Mouthing off from both benches.

NEIL does well to force a Hawke's Bay corner

YELLOW CARD SHEEHAN dishing out cards like candy.  HOYLE this time after a challenge with VICELICH. Again very soft.

Both sides now end to end as they search for a winner.  Who has something left???

The visitors with the majority of possesion with 5 m ins remaining.  Hawke's Bay holding strong at the back.

SUBSTITUTE HAWKE"S BAY   Jarrod SMITH is replaced by Rudy BAUERFIEND   & AUCKLAND  David BROWNE is replaced by Daniel SARIC

MARGETTS with a mazey run but intercepted by Simon ARMS

YELLOW CARD  PEVERLEY gets, and deservidly so, a Yellow after clattering TADE

The fourth official has indicated a minimum of 4 additional minutes.

The Bay finishing the stronger and creating chances.

Still a bit of bite here as WILLIAMS throws his toys after LOVEMORE catches him late

LOVEMORE burns off IWATA down the right and the Auckland defender takes him down.  No booking very suprisingly.
