Waitakere sweep aside brave Manawatu

by Bob Pearce at Fred Taylor Park

WHENUAPAI - Waitakere United celebrated goalkeeper Danny Robinson’s 100th game with a clean sheet as they beat YoungHeart Manawatu 4-0 at Fred Taylor Park.
Surprisingly it was only their fouth clean sheet of the season but it carries them temporarily eight points clear at the top of the ASB Premiership.
Sure they were clearly the better side. But Manawatu did not perform like a team struggling at the foot of the table with just one win to their credit.
It wasn’t until the 27th minute that Waitakere broke the deadlock as Brian Shelley drew the defence out of position and fellow defender Tim Myers was unchallenged to head home a corner from Chad Coombes.
Four minutes later the same combination repeated the tactic and Myers unusually had a double and the champions began to look the part at last.
Not that Manawatu were lying down. Alex Rufer produced some sleight of foot worthy of his more illustrious relatives, beat two defenders but then watched his curving shot pass the wrong side of the upright. Soon afterwards Tom Mosquera rattled the woodwork with Robinson grasping air.
Two nil at halftime was parsimonious scoring considering the first half had yielded 14 corners, nine to Waitakere and five to the visitors.
The home team wore black armbands in respect for Roy Krishna’s beloved uncle, who died during the week. The Fijian striker honoured the memory with a clinching goal in the 74th minute when he fastened on to a well-judged pass from substitute Dylan Stansfield and beat Matt Borren at the second attempt.
And Krishna completed the scoring in the extended time added on for a drinks break as he made the most of service from another substitute, Luiz Delmonte.
Waitakere coach Paul Marshall had nothing but praise for his speedy striker after the game.
“I thought Krishna was superb today and Tim Myers was exceptional in defence,” he said. “Conditions were good but in the first 20 minutes we were not at our best. We settled into it better in the second part of the first half and scored the goals. We’re scoring a lot more from set pieces now.”
Of his recent signings Marshall was pleased with Tristan Prattley’s debut but believed Japanese Masaki Nomoto struggled with the different style of play in his first start.
Manawatu coach Stu Jacobs believed the scoreline flattered Waitakere.
“I think we did enough in the first 20 minutes to get ahead,” he said. “But as I explained to the boys, sometimes you don’t get the rewards.”
Waitakere’s next game is one of their biggest of the season – away to perennial rivals Auckland City at Kiwitea St.

This season the West Aucklanders have the upper hand with a win in the pre-season ASB Charity Cup and a draw in the ASB Premiership clash at the Fred.

Victory would probably clinch the minor premiership for Waitakere.

The match also marked the first time an ASB Premiership match has been streamed live online.

Waitakere United and OFC TV signed a broadcast agreement earlier this week to cover all the club's remaining matches for the 2012/13 ASB Premiership campaign.
