Playoff hopes alive as Wellington lift Gordon Cup

CHRISTCHURCH - Team Wellington kept their slim play-off hopes alive and returned to the capital with the Gordon Cup- after beating Canterbury 2-0 this afternoon.

The visitors were inspired by new signing Luis Corrales, who terrorised the Canterbury defence with his deceptive pace and direct running.

The Costa Rican assisted in both Wellington goals. Just on half-time, he tangled with the Dragons Louie Bush inside the Canterbury box, and the referee Mark Hester adjudged he had been fouled.

From the resultant spot-kick, Wiremu Patrick comfortably converted. Then midway through the second half, Corrales added the second goal, after making a strong run into the Canterbury box. He held off a few challenges, before steering the ball home into the far corner passed Highfield in the Dragons goal.

Team Wellington coach, Matt Calcott, said his new signing was happy to come back to Christchurch two weeks running, after scoring last week for Auckland City.
He was great, he is such a great outlet for us, and such a fantastic point of difference, and what a second goal from him, he said.

Calcott also heaped praise on his team, and said their play-off dream was still alive.
We really defended well and concentrated for the full 90 minutes. It's the first time we have been able to field a really experienced side.
'For us it is just week to week now. Making sure we get stronger every week. Today, compared with recent weeks, was chalk and cheese. We need other sides to lose- it is not a good situation- but we have to just keep winning.

Canterbury still stay fourth with a six point buffer, but the defeat is their third in a row at home, and there was little for red and black faithful to get excited about today.

Dragons coach Keith Braithwaite afterward, went so far to say, it was one of the worst performances under his tutelage.

Without playmaker Aaron Clapham, the Dragons lacked quality of delivery at set-pieces. Wide men, Darren White and Andrew Barton, who deputised in his absence, rarely troubled the visitors defence with their deliveries.

Both were substituted during the second half, as Braithwaite tried to breath fire into another listless home performance.

The Dragons defence looked uncomfortable throughout, and the early season confidence and assurance, is clearly dissipating under a dismal run of defeats.

A frustrated Braithwaite, admitted that his team have some soul searching do.
We never got going. Our performance all over the field and delivery was disappointing. [But] it won't happen again, he warned.

Best for the visitors, were the industrious Corey Chettleburgh, Wiremu Patrick and Luis Corrales.

For Canterbury, full-back Nick Wortelboer- who went off injured, forward Ashley Wellbourn, and goalkeeper Adam Highfield who had a great finger tip save in the first half.
