Auckland send Jordan off with win

by Bob Pearce at Kiwitea Street

AUCKLAND - Departing Auckland City hero Keryn Jordan reckons he would have boosted the score sheet if he had been on the field for City’s 3-1 victory over Otago United yesterday.
Jordan, who heads home to South Africa this week to continue his battle with cancer, was a prolific scorer for Auckland as they won three ASB Premiership crowns. He was guest of honour at Kiwitea St yesterday.
“Personally I think we could have scored far more goals in the first half. To let Otago back in was a bit poor. I reckon they should have given young David Browne a bit more time.”
Would he have scored a couple?

“More than that”, he quipped as he reminisced with his old South African-born clubmate Grant Young.
Most people came to Kiwitea expecting a goal feast for the home team as Otago lost three of their back four to suspension.
But the Southerners had other ideas. They conceded a goal in the 17th minute when Manel Exposito exchanged passes with Pedro Garcia to split the defence and Andrew Milne was on hand to score the goal.
Seven minutes later it was 2-0 as Exposito’s freekick from the edge of the penalty area was deflected past Liam Little. Maybe Auckland took their foot of the accelerator but the visitors came back with a vengeance.
The author of the pressure was former French backpacker Victor Da Costa, who showed speed and masterly control to keep the ball in play on the right and delivered the perfect cross that Regan Coldicott buried in style to make it 2-1 in the 37th minute.
A couple of minutes later Da Costa rattled the Auckland crossbar with a piledriver from just outside the penalty area and then delivered a tantalising cross that Aaron Burgess and Sam Mepham lunged at but couldn’t force home.
Auckland had created plenty of chances of their own with Emiliano Tade and Exposito unable to take advantage of the best of them.
It wasn’t until the 66th minute when substitute Adam Dickinson made the game safe with a goal that will not feature on his highlights tape. The ball bounced around in a melee of players before his stubbed shot had just enough legs to trickle over the line.
“I think we were a little bit hung over from last week,” said Auckland coach Ramon Tribulietx. “It wasn’t our best game by a long way. There were so many chances we should have put away.”
For Otago coach Richard Murray it was a bitter-sweet experience with his depleted side against a team on a winning streak.
“It was still a loss,” he said. “The boys battled hard and we had some chances. I can’t fault the effort they put in.
“We stood too far off them in the first 20 minutes but then we were able to put them under pressure before we ran out of legs at the end.”
Auckland have a tough schedule ahead with an away game against Hawke's Bay followed by a home fixture against league leaders Waitakere and two games in a week against Team Wellington.
