CHRISTCHURCH - Auckland City were too good for a jaded looking Canterbury today, winning 3-1 in Christchurch after a slow start.

The Aucklanders move into second on the ASB Premiership table, behind champions Waitakere, after second half goals from Daniel Koprivcic and substitute Emiliano Tade secured the points.

Coach, Ramon Tribulietx, was delighted with the win, but admitted his team had struggled to get going.  “It took us a while to get control of the game. We did not have the situation or position, so we could not create goal-scoring opportunities,” he said.

Tribulietx though, was pleased with how his team recovered, and said they had hoped to soak up the pressure from a determined Dragons side.

“We imposed our style in the end. They did press us for the first half. But we knew they would not be able to sustain that for 90 minutes. It was a matter of taking control and being patient, and trusting the way we play.”

The Dragons, missing captain Dan Terris after he picked up a calf knock, got off to a flyer following a lively opening. Forward,Andrew Barton, netted his first goal of the season, heading home, after Aaron Clapham pitched in a great delivery to the far post.

The visitors, Auckland, struggled to get their rhythm going as the Dragons pressed high up the field, forcing them into uncharacteristic mistakes with the loss of possession in their own half.

However, against the run of play, City equalized when the impressive Alex Feneridis rose majestically to head home a looping Corrales free-kick, beyond an unguarded Dragons goalkeeper, Adam Highfield.

Just before the interval, Highfield had to be alert to tip over a goal-bound header from Chris Bale, as the Aucklanders began to prevail in the midfield and win more possession.

The Dragons weaknesses in the air at the back, were further exposed just after the break, when Daniel Koprivcic latched onto a loose ball following a cross which was not cleared. He scored, side-footing home easily from close-in.

Darren White did bring a good save out of Auckland keeper Tamati Williams soon after, with a pile driver from inside the box. But the reality is Canterbury offered little else as an attacking force.

Their first half exploits shutting down the Aucklanders had clearly caught up with them.

Substitute Emiliano Tade, put the game beyond Canterbury when he flashed a header into bottom far corner after some rather poor marking from a free-kick out by the touchline.

Dragons coach, Keith Braithwate, was gracious in defeat but lamented the defensive lapses that the visitors benefited from.

“We have been beaten by a team which is a very good footballing side. We made mistakes and they punished them. The third goal - a free header. The second goal, people getting the wrong side - we just got punished.”

Braithwate felt the holiday break had not helped. It's a big ask having a month's break..They (Auckland) have been playing Club World Cup and professional sides so they are naturally fit. It's a hard ask.”
