ASB Premiership - Round 7, Bluewater Stadium, 16 December 2012
Dakota LUCAS 13'
Halftime:2-0 Referee: Nick WALDRON Crowd: 426
by David Gearey at Bluewater Stadium
In doing so Hawke's Bay have now given themselves a comftorble slender one point buffer heading into the summer break.
In hot Hawke's Bay weather conditions, it didn’t take long for the home side to hit their straps with two goals in the 13th and 14th minutes by Dakote Lucas and Cole Peverley that left Wellington rocked and gasping for air.
Lucas - making his Hawke’s Bay debut - was the first to break the deadlock when he headed home a Bill Robertson knock down after a long freekick had found the Bay captain unmarked in the Wellington box.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors when only a minute later the Bay doubled their lead.
A long ball from Richard Gillespie found the impressive Connor Tinnion and the tricky winger drew a foul from Justin Gulley.
Referee Nick Waldron had no choice but to award the penalty which former All White Cole Peverley emphatically drilled home.
For Team Wellington, halftime couldn’t have come sooner and coach Matt Calcott must have had some wise words for his side as they returned from the dressing room a more controlled and organised team.
But Tinnion put the game to bed in the 66th minute when he calmly stroked a freekick around the wall and into Scott Basalaj’s bottom right hand corner.
Bay coach Chris Greatholder was delighted with the result and put it down to a well drilled game plan that had his team dominating the match for the first 20 minutes.
He said: “The first 15 to 20 minutes today was purposeful. The boys worked really hard for the first twenty and in doing so we scored at key times."
“There were a lot of boys out there desperate for a clean sheet and desperate to protect what we had got," Greatholder added.
Narrowing down a single stand-out performer proved too difficult for the affable Englishman.
“There’s probably three or four players who you could say were man of the match out there today," he said.
Calcott disappointed in defeat was humble with his reply.
“I think Hawke's Bay thoroughly deserved it today. I think the first 20 minutes you were right into it and I think that’s something we need to learn as a younger group”
But the Team Wellington coach was also understanding towards his side’s frustrations and praised them for their professional attitudes in what has been a testing time for the franchise with players training with the Wellington Phoenix set-up.
“I feel a little bit sorry for our side at the moment. They are asked to have this kind of piece meal approach to training and playing, and unfortunately it’s not easy for them.
“But all of them to a man have been excellent and have taken it in their stride and for this I take my hat off to them,” Calcott added.
With a Wellington home match hoodoo now swept aside, Hawke's Bay can eye shifting its other unwanted record - that of never appearing in the playoffs.
Team Wellington's defeat sees them sit five points outside the top four but with the club brimming with talent, they can never be written off.
