Browne debut goal catches the eye

AUCKLAND - Sixteen-year-old David Browne scored an eye-catching goal on debut as Auckland City beat Young Heart Manawatu 4-0 at Kiwitea St.

The youngster, who is still at St Peter’s College, came on in the 67th minute with the score at 3-0 and added some vitality to an Auckland team who were beginning to show some after effects of their trip to Japan for the FIFA Club World Cup.

Within a couple of minutes Browne, who grew up in Papua New Guinea, had the ball in the net, only to be ruled offside.

Nothing daunted, a couple of minutes later he made sure from close range on the angle for his first in the ASB Premiership.

On a warm and sunny Auckland day the home team were always going to be wary of conceding ground to the rest of the Premiership teams after their two-game absence.

They were quickly into their usual possession-based routine and Manawatu took time to adjust to the pace of the game.

In the 16th minute Auckland went ahead when the impressive Chris Bale got his head to an Alex Feneridis corner.

Three minutes later Emiliano Tade couldn’t believe his luck when he was left unmarked in front of goal for a simple conversion.

Just before the break Manel Exposito was brought down by Nathan Cooksley and referee Isaac Trevis, who had an excellent game, had no hesitation awarding a penalty, which Exposito drove home.

Manawatu were much more on the pace in the second spell as Auckland legs wearied and there were chances for Seule Soromon, who had come on as a substitute, and Adam Cowan. But it was the mercurial Browne who had the last word.

Manawatu coach Stu Jacobs was far from disconsolate about the defeat, seeing a number of positive signs against a quality team.

“Last year we came here into the Lions’ Den and were smothered by five goals,” he said. “This time it was four but it was a very different game. We had five good chances and we should have scored from three.

“In the first half we had to defend well, but we turned the ball over too often. We reassessed at halftime and we were much better but you’ve got to score when you have the chance. “

Auckland coach Ramon Tribulietx was enthusiastic about Browne’s debut and satisfied with the way his team coped with the travel weariness they felt.

“David has been training with us for some time but he’s only 16 and I’ve been looking for the right opportunity to give him a chance and he didn’t disappoint me.

“We dominated the first half with about 75 per cent of the ball but in the end we got a little bit tired. Luis Corrales has just had a baby and he’s hardly had any sleep for the past three days.”

Auckland have a catch-up game against Waikato on January 9. Four days later they are away to Canterbury United.
