Waitakere down ten-man Hawke's Bay

WHENUAPAI - Waitakere United consolidated their position at the top of the ASB Premiership with an on-again, off-again 3-1 win over Hawkes Bay United at Fred Taylor Park.

For the first 20 minutes the West Aucklanders looked good for double figures and a 2-0 lead was scant reward for a host of chances as the Bay seemed to have lost their way.

But the visitors grabbed one back rather against the run of play, Waitakere started to misfire and, even when Bay were down to 10 men when Sean Lovemore earned a second yellow, they could only add an injury time third from substitute Milos Nikolic.

Perhaps it was the unusual sight of sunshine in West Auckland or their Manchester City-like strip but Hawkes Bay were a shambles in the opening minutes.

Within a minute Allan Pearce butchered a chance after the defence stood off. Chad Coombes was also astray a minute later when put through by Roy Krishna.

Something had to give and in the 11th minute Brian Shelley scored his first for the club with a well-directed header from a David Mulligan free-kick. Three minutes later it was 2-0 as Mulligan was on hand to add the finishing touch when the Bay defence failed to cope with a Tim Myers long clearance.

What looked like being the Slaughter of the Innocents was turned into a real contest when Stephen Hoyle capitalised on some sleepy Waitakere defence after a free-kick by Stephen Hindmarch.

Hawke's Bay gained in belief, Waitakere found themselves under pressure and nobody was able to relax. Consequently t he standard of the football deteriorated and it took a judicial intervention to swing the balance.

Sean Lovemore, playing against his old club, had earned a yellow card in the 32nd minute when he questioned a decision by referee Matt Conger. He received a second in the 58th minute for a rash challenge and his team were reduced to 10.

Even so it took until the 92nd minute for Waitakere to add to their tally. Nikolic had just come on as a substitute when Bay, who were pressing for an equaliser, were caught on the break and the tall striker scored against one of his former clubs.

Waitakere coach Paul Marshall said the opening minutes felt as is it was going to be a 10-niller.

The missed chances were a worry but to put a positive spin on it, it shows the number of chances were creating.

Hawke's Bay coach Chris Greatholder conceded that his team had been way of the pace in the opening exchanges.

But Im quite proud of the boys the way we stood to our task. After 20 minutes we got ourselves in to the game and at halftime I thought we could win it. At the end they caught us on the break when we were pushing for 2-2.

Waitakere travel to Christchurch next weekend to play second-placed Christchurch United. They will train twice this week on artificial pitches to prepare for the game.
