Canterbury stretch winning streak

CHRISTCHURCH - Canterbury United were convincing winners today beating a disappointing Hawke's Bay 4-0 in Christchurch.

It was the visitors first defeat of the season, and they finished the match with ten men after Cole Peverley was sent off during the second half.

A brace from Aaron Clapham and a goal apiece from Russell Kamo and captain Dan Terris had the Dragons moving onto second spot of the Premiership ladder.

While possession was shared during the first half, it was the Dragons who looked the more likely. And it was no surprise when Dimitar Bayrev played in Clapham with a deft pass. The midfielder finished in style slotting the ball home inside the far post.

Andrew Barton then showed great tenacity to win the ball on the edge of the box before setting up the unmarked Russell Kamo who showed great technique- drilling the ball home first-time from 12 yards out.

Any hopes Hawke's Bay had of a recovery evaporated at the start of the second half, after Cole Peverley seen red for a two footed tackle on Vladimir Bayrev infront of the linesman.

Canterbury then extented their lead via the penalty spot after the busy Kamo was brought down in the box.

Clapham duly did the honours, firing his spot-kick high into the net beyond Gillespie in the visitors goal.

Captain Dan Terris, made up for missing a sitter in the first half, when he got on the end of a Clapham freekick heading home inside the near post.

It was the Dragons full-back's third goal in 113 Premiership appearances.

Afterwards, Dragons coach Keith Braithwaite lauded his team's dominant performance.
It was a good game with good goals. We are getting better with every game, and the players we are bringing on are doing the job too,he said.

Braithwaite also singled out defender Nick Wortelboer. We wanted Nick there to help watch Sean Lovemore, and he came in and did well.

Hawke's Bay coach Chris Greatholder, kept his players locked in the dressing room immeadiately after the final whistle. When he emerged he had no excuses.

We were off the pace today. We tried a couple of things today in terms of our shape and how well we pressed up the field. Canterbury dictated easy at times, and we have just spoken there to the players about empowerment and having accountability out there.

Greatholder said the Peverley sending off was disappointing as that vitually killed the game off.
It's a shame, because we wanted to play higher up the field after the first half, but it seems the linesman got involved. At the end of the day we did not start well enough and Canterbury deserved it.

Best for Canterbury, Russell Kamo, Aaron Clapham and Dimitar Bayrev. Nick Wortelboer and Tom Schwarz were solid throughout at the back.

For the visitors, Bill Robertson stood tall. Sean Lovemore was a threat at times and goalkeeper Richard Gillespie stopped the match from becoming a rout with some good stops during the second half.
