Champs bounce back to extend unbeaten sequence

by Bob Pearce at Fred Taylor Park

WHENUAPAI - Waitakere United came from a goal down to beat Otago United 4-1 and cement their position at the top of the ASB Premiership.
The defeat condemns the Southerners to the Premiership cellar but no spectator at Fred Taylor Park this afternoon would write off their chances of turning their season around.
In blustery conditions that made accurate passing tricky, Otago went ahead in the seventh minute when 17-year-old Joel Stevens, clearly an emerging talent, fastened on to a long goal-kick, eluded some desultory Waitakere defence and added a clinical finish.
The early shock jolted Waitakere into action but they were kept under pressure in the vital areas and the delivery from the midfield to their speedy strikers was too often intercepted.

Still, they were level in the 13th minute as a speculative shot from distance by Chad Coombes was fumbled by Liam Little and David Mulligan was on hand to punish the error.
Otago’s miserly defence frustrated the home side until the 55th minute when the Westies’ captain, Jake Butler, repeating his scoring effort from last week with a shot from outside the penalty area that found the corner of the goal.
The visitors opted for attack rather than containment and they came close to drawing level when Stevens hit the crossbar with goalkeeper Danny Robinson beaten.
There was always the danger of paying the price for chasing victory and in the 86th minute, Roy Krishna, who seems to have lost his scoring touch, collected a long clearance and found himself with only Little to beat. The goalkeeper blocked his first effort but the ball ran kindly for the Fijian international to score.
And a couple of minutes later Krishna displayed another of his skills when he glided a perfect pass to the feet of Ryan De Vries for the fourth goal.
“Any win is a good result,” said Waitakere coach Paul Marshall. “It’s not always easy and this wasn’t the prettiest.
“We had to scrap when we went down early and we were under the cosh again later in the game.”
For Otago coach Richard Murray it was a story that’s become familiar this season as his team have been denied the points they deserve.
“We’re better than where we are on the table,” he said. “One all was a fair indication and we were sticking to our game plan to deny them space.
“But then we didn’t shut them down on the edge of the area and we gave Butler a free shot. We pressed forward then because there’s no point in losing 2-1 without going for the equaliser.”
Waitakere are back at home yet again next weekend when they play Hawkes Bay United. Otago are away yet against to Team Wellington.
On Wednesday Waitakere host the Phoenix A team in an evening fixture. Marshall has promised to give some of his younger players an outing and he would like an extended look at newest signing Milos Nikolic, who came on as a sub late in today’s game.
