ASB Premiership - Round 5
MOSQUERA 68', 90'+2'

Cossey was promoted to head coach on Tuesday after the sacking of Declan Edge, and his young charges responded with their first win of the season.
“The boys stuck to the game plan,” said Cossey, “and it brought us the result.”
Waikato had been playing a game based on intricate passing, but this week saw them change to a more direct style.
“We wanted to be more penetrative,” explained Cossey. “Once we’re in their half, just two, three passes with speed to create opportunities to score.”
After a 5-0 mauling by Canterbury United last week, Waikato could have been forgiven for starting tentatively against Manawatu, but instead they gained immediate ascendancy.
The more direct approach was rewarded by the opener in the 18th minute, courtesy of a terrific Rory Turner shot placed into the top corner of the net.
As the game wore on, Manawatu used their physicality to steadily gain a greater share of possession. The experienced centre pairing of Nathan Cooksley and Adam Cowan were able to cut down the space for Waikato and regularly force turnovers.
It was not until past the hour mark that YoungHeart finally found their equaliser, courtesy of a Tom Mosquera free kick. His low strike took a deflection off the wall, stranding Matt Upton in the Waikato goal.
Manawatu barely had time to celebrate before Waikato responded emphatically. This time, it was Sam Margetts providing the champagne finish with a superbly-placed shot that looped just inside the far post.
The goal seemed to rattle the home side and Waikato pushed forward looking to seal the match. Substitute Mohammed Awad ran at the Manawatu defence time and again, his intricate dribbling repeatedly causing problems.
The pressure told in the 81st minute. A loose touch in the Manawatu defence was pounced on by the determined Ryan Thomas, who effortlessly side-footed past ‘keeper Matt Borren.
The composure in front of goal from the side was all the more impressive coming from a Waikato side that had managed only a single goal in four previous outings.
With time running out, Manawatu poured forward, competing ferociously for the ball all over the park.
In stoppage time, a low cross finally got through the Waikato lines and the lethal Mosquera was on hand to coolly finish from close range. The goal was his seventh in only five games, making him the leading goal scorer in the ASB Premiership this season.
There was no time to find an equaliser for Manawatu. The full-time whistle came seconds later.
The result leaves both sides on three points with only Otago United beneath them.
For Waikato, it is a result that is critical for team morale.
“I’ve got to get some confidence into the boys,” said Cossey. “There’s some good talent in this squad, they’re just lacking a bit of confidence.”
Waikato get a bye next week to build that confidence. For Manawatu, things do not get any easier as they face a rampant Canterbury United.

Welcome to Westpac Stadium for this round five clash between Youngheart Manawatu and Waikato FC. This is technically a home game for Manawatu, even though it is being played in Wellington. Speaking of the Capital - it may have turned the weather on for the big Hobbit premiere mid-week, but it has turned it off again for the football. It's chilly, windy and dark clouds lurk ominously overhead. Fingers crossed the rain stays away for the duration.
This is an important game for both sides. Manawatu has lost three on the trot and Waikato are yet to register a point. Both teams will have been eyeing this fixture as a chance to put recent difficulties behind them. For Waikato, that goes beyond on-field form, with coach Declan Edge being replaced by Mark Cossey during the week. Cossey will be hoping his side can keep eleven players on the pitch, as red cards in their last two matches have cost Waikato dearly.
The teams are coming out on to the pitch now and we're just about set to go. In team news, David PARKINSON is in the starting line-up for Waikato while Adam LUQUE comes on to the bench. On the Manawatu side, Michael FRASER joins the matchday squad for the first time this season while Soulymane CISSOKO isn't going to get his first call up after all.
And we're off, with Youngheart Manawatu getting us started. It's hard to say if they have the benefit of the wind, which is of the typical swirling Westpac Stadium variety that will make life tricky for both sides.
An early shot from COOKSLEY for Manawatu, volleying with his left from the edge of the area, but it is comfortable for UPTON in the Waikato goal.
A long ball from Waikato is easily defused by BORREN, who is quick off his line.
Waikato build from the back, sweeping up the left before Ryan THOMAS plays a neat one-two on the edge of the area, but his low shot is pushed around the post by BORREN.
Corner for Waikato is too deep and easily cleared by Youngheart.
A through ball from COOKSLEY after an interchange with MOSQUERA is meant for CHETTLEBURGH, but the Waikato defence has stepped up well and he is offside.
Now it is Waikato's turn to be caught offside just inside the Manawatu box. Both teams looking to settle.
Waikato just starting to get the better of a congested midfield now, but then Manawatu sweep up the right and Adam COWAN sees his cross-come-shot go tantalisingly wide of the far post.
Corner for Waikato. THOMAS swings it in and a half-clearance falls to TURNER, whose shot goes wide.
A long range effort from Eder FRANCHINI is well over the Manawatu crossbar. Waikato, though, are starting to threaten.
Manawatu pressing now, but the Waikato defence looks well-marshalled and CHETTLEBURGH's shot is blocked. Waikato break and KENNEDY ends up picking up a booking as he tries to slow the assault.
GOAL! Waikato 1-0! TURNER picked up the ball just inside the corner of the box and hit a terrific right-foot strike on the turn into the top corner of the Manawatu goal. That was quality!
Liam HIGGINS picks up a booking for a rough challenge as Waikato really have their tails up now. The resulting free-kick, though, goes harmlessly across goal.
WALLIS sets MARGETTS free on the right, but his shot from the edge of the area is sliced and misses by some margin.
Manawatu are guilty of some loose passing when in possession, which is hampering their ability to create chances.
COOKSLEY gets free in the middle of the park and puts MOSQUERA away down the right, but his cross is comfortably intercepted by Matt UPTON.
Matt KENNEDY mistimes a sliding tackle and gets a talking to by the ref. He needs to be careful.
Grant ROBSON pounces on a loose ball on the edge of the Waikato penalty area and ducks inside, putting it onto his left. But after doing the hard work, his shot is well high and wide.
MOSQUERA wriggles free eight yards from goal on the angle, but his low shot is smothered by the legs of UPTON. Manawatu getting back into it now...
Waikato suddenly looking a little rattled and their passing is not as tight as it was.
Space opening up in the middle of the park now and HOW slips onto a through ball but stabs the ball wide of the right-hand post.
A high foot from KENNEDY in the centre circle and its another lecture from the man in black.
A great turn from THOMAS and he dodges into the Manawatu box. His shot beats BORREN, but CUMBER is there to clear superbly off the line.
Manawatu are taking KENNEDY off, probably to avoid him getting another yellow. On comes Tyson Brandt.
PARKINSON goes down in a clash with MOSQUERA. He doesn't look too good, but after some treatment will play on.
Corner for Manawatu swung in from the right. UPTON punches, then collects the rebound.
And that's half-time. Mark Cossey will be the happier of the two coaches, obviously. His Waikato side have been deserving of their lead, but Manawatu began to really come back into it in the last 15 minutes of the half. It looks like a game where the midfield will decide it - when Waikato have room, they look able to come forward and play creatively, but when Manawatu press, they can wrestle the majority of possession. Fitness could be key in there as this game progresses.
Waikato get the second half underway now. At the break, Manawatu have replaced their other booked player, Liam HIGGINS, with Jordan MARTENS.
The midfield dogfight resumes straight away and COWAN gets a word from the ref after a late tackle.
CUMBER puts in a teasing cross from the right, but a diving UPTON does enough to veer it away from danger. From the throw, a scramble leads to a shot by BRANDT, but it is well-blocked.
MARGETTS cuts back to TURNER, but he mis-hits his side-footed effort from around the penalty spot and it trickles away for a goal kick.
A long ball puts CHETTLEBURGH in, but the Waikato defence flood back to stamp the attack out.
MOSQUERA has a shot blocked and it breaks for CHETTLEBURGH, who shoots wide.
An optimistic long range speculator from the Manawatu captain is spilled by UPTON over for a corner.
The resulting corner is headed clear by Waikato, but Manawatu starting to really push now.
ROBSON finds space in the Waikato box, but hooks his right-foot shot and falls to his knees in disbelief.
Another long range effort, this time from COOKSLEY, but it is well over the bar.
A corner for Waikato is a bit of relief for the visitors. HOBSON-McVEIGH takes it, but it is too shallow and Manawatu header clear short of the near post.
Now Waikato come back into it, SCHRIJVERS forced to head clear from a useful cross.
ROBSON plays in MOSQUERA, but he shoots over from a tight angle on the right.
Substitution for Waikato. AWAD is on for PARKINSON.
Free kick for Manawatu 35 metres out. COWAN swings it in, looking for the far post runners, but UPTON gets a fist to it and it is out for a corner.
GOAL! Manawatu are back! MOSQUERA's low free kick gets a deflection off the end of the wall, wrong-footing UPTON and finding the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
GOAL! That's how to answer back! No sooner do Manawatu level, but Waikato take it back to 2-1. Sam MARGETTS steadies himself just inside the box and his swerving, dipping shot to the far post was a beauty.
That goal seems to have taken the wind out of the Manawatu sails. Waikato look confident now, starting to control things.
Substitution for Manawatu with ROBSON coming off for Billy SCOTT.
Sam MARGETTS finds an inch of space just inside the Manawatu penalty area, but shoots over this time.
AWAD, who has looked lively since coming on, jinks inside on the right, but his cross is disappointing and BORRENS collects without any trouble.
GOAL! Ryan THOMAS for Waikato! He stepped into the Manawatu box before burying it with his right, giving BORREN no chance on that one. 3-1 now.
Manawatu are trying to increase the pace, pressuring everything. COOKSLEY wins a corner.
CHETTLEBURGH sends the corner in and UPTON just about does enough to clear with a glancing fist. It is swung back in by MOSQUERA and this time he gets two hands on it.
HOBSON-McVEIGH plays a short ball to TURNER who spind, but his shot is blocked and balloons into the air for BORRENS to collect.
Jesse EDGE is on for Waikato, replacing Sam MARGETTS.
Manawatu press again, but the balls into the box are being well handled by the Waikato defenders and goalkeeper. They go up the other end, but TURNER is caught offside.
MOSQUERA collects inside the Waikato half and sets off on a run. The ball gets away from him and his sliding challenge is frustration more than anything else. A booking is the result. Goal! Is there time left? MOSQUERA seemingly can't stop scoring. This time, it was a close-range sidefoot from a cross from the left. Manawatu desperate now! But that's full-time...
