AUCKLAND - For Hawke's Bay United it was ninth time lucky when they drew 1-1 with last year’s minor premiers Auckland City at Kiwitea St yesterday.

Eight times they have travelled north to the Sandringham ground with no reward. This time they take a draw that leaves them level on points with Auckland in second place in the ASB Premiership after three rounds.

For the first 20 minutes it looked like business as usual for the home team as they created a string of chances while the visitors were chasing shadows.

But the complexion of the game changed in the 32nd minute when a long ball found Bay striker Sean Lovemore, who outpaced the defence and cleverly eluded goalkeeper Tamati Williams with a classic finish.

From then on Hawke's Bay settled into the pattern that coach Chris Greatholder has built up. Defensively they denied Auckland chances from close range as Aaron Jones, Danny Wilson and particularly Bill Robertson manned a defensive shield that increasingly frustrated the talented Aucklanders.

The equaliser finally came in the 53rd minute when fullback Takuya Iwata used his speed to create space on the left and Alex Feneridis provided the finish after a couple of his team-mates had misfired.

Auckland continued to create chances but their finishing was poor and there was always the chance that Bay would  strike on the counter-attack through Lovemore, who now leads the Golden Boot on his own with five goals, or Conor Tinnion, whose dead ball skills promised freekick danger .

Perhaps there was an element of luck that saw shots by Feneridis and substitute Pedro Santa Cecilia Garcia blocked but the Bay deserved some good fortune for the wholehearted display by the team.

The only sour note was a second yellow and a sending off for the industrious Harley Rodeka in time added on. He will miss the next game against his old team-mates at Otago United as a result.

Greatholder had nothing but praise for his team, who he described as a “good, hard-working bunch of guys.

“We’ve seen a couple of Auckland’s games and we let them have their channels, but not much space in the box.

“We struggled in the first 20 minutes but then we got into our skin and the boys put in a great shift.

“We’d like to play a more expansive game and maybe we will against Otago. We’re a young team and we’re still missing three of our key players, Jarrod Smith, Dakota Lucas and Ross Haviland.”

Auckland coach Ramon Tribulietx, as always, was philosophical but undeterred with his eyes on the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan next month.

“We’re definitely not changing our style,” he said. “That style gave us 25 chances but we just couldn’t find the net. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see the missed chances cost us. Maybe we tried to finish too nicely.”

Next weekend Auckland play old rivals Waitakere United, who have already beaten them in the ASB Charity Cup.

Revenge? “No,” said Tribulietx, “ three points.”

Halftime

Auckland City 0-1 Hawke's Bay United - Sean Lovemore's goal on 32 minutes is the difference between these two teams at the break with the home side dominating the possession. Hawke's Bay United have it where it counts though and Lovemore has five goals after three games - could it be Bay's time to win at Kiwitea Street for the first time ever?

46'-

No changes for either side and a substitution of play-by-play reporters following a technology hitch...! Bob Pearce off, Gordon Glen Watson in.

47'-

Auckland City have had a good chunk of the second half here but can't quite get a clear cut chance on goal - Hawke's Bay's organisation in defence is exemplary.
