Canterbury snare Southern bragging rights

by John Donnachie at ASB Football Park

CHRISTCHURCH - Canterbury United squeezed past Otago United 2-1 this afternoon in the mainland derby in difficult windy conditions.

The brisk Christchurch southerly played havoc throughout the match, with both goalkeepers conceding goals they would not normally lose.

Otago goalkeeper Liam Little, was bewitched by a Darren White cross which ended up wrongfooting him, after a freak gust of wind appeared to alter the course of the ball.

Bulgarian import Dimitar Bayrev, added a second with a neat lobbed finish beyond a stranded Little within a minute of the breakthrough, as the visitors appeared to be reeling.

But then right on the interval, Dragons keeper Adam Highfield, failed to deal with a wind-assisted inswinging corner, and his weak parried save only went as far as Joel Stevens, who swiftly dispatched a shot low into the corner through a ruck of players.

The second half finally sprang into life in the last quarter after a rather forgettable passage of play beforehand.

Canterbury appeared to have the match secured when with around 20 minutes to go, Julyan Collett was adjudged to have been pulled down in the six yard box.

But to the shock of the home fans, the normally reliable Aaron Clapham missed his spot-kick. His effort lacked conviction and Little saved easily down low at the post.

Canterbury striker Russell Kamo hit the post with a shot from 20 yards out as the Dragons struggled to close the match out. Otago substitute Ant Hancock then steeled himself into the Canterbury box but with just Highfield to beat, he fluffed his shot.

Otago sub Jude Fitzpatrick had the ball in the net a minute later, but the referee ruled for an infringment on a Canterbury defender.

Afterwards Canterbury coach Keith Braithwite was a relieved man. He described the win as “not our prettiest performance.”
“It was a hard fought win. We were in control of the game and then gave away a stupid goal. The conditions did not help- but I'm pleased with the three points.”

Otago coach Richard Murray, believed his team “gifted” both goals to Canterbury and he  expressed his disappointment at not leaving with a share of the spoils:

“We had the better of the second half. We put them[Canterbury] under pressure. But we are just not consistent enough. Some of the refereeing decisions are hurting us at the moment too.”

Best for Canterbury was midfielder Dimitar Bayrev who notched his first goal for the club. Winger Darren White was a constant threat down the flanks, while the versatile Julyan Collett put in a steady shift between defence and midfield.

For Otago, attacking midfielder Joel Stevens, was a stand-out throughout and could have scored again, just missing out on several ocassions. Striker Morgan Day was always willing for the cause, and captain Tristan Prattley was solid in defence.
