As they have so often before, South Africans Grant Young and Keryn Jordan provided the second-half goals after the home team had squandered several chances in the first 45 minutes at the Croatian Cultural Society ground in Te Atatu.

Both teams relished the fine surface in front of a crowd of around 900 at Auckland City's temporary headquarters but goals were hard to come by despite plenty of scoring chances.

"I think it was a good performance from us in the end," said Auckland coach Colin Tuaa. "But Hawke's Bay put up a fight in the first half. I said at halftime that we had to be patient and the goals would come.

"The good thing was that we kept hold of the ball and kept probing. You have to admire the skills of Keryn and Grant. They shield the ball well and set it up for others - and they score goals.

"Chad Coombes is learning to do the basics better and his was a very disciplined effort."

Jonathan Gould was disappointed that his Hawke's Bay side conceded the first goal from a set piece.

"In the first half we were right in it and we could well have taken the lead," he said. "In the second half I'd have to say Auckland deserved to win the game."

Young's goal in the 55th minute followed a right-wing corner that the Bay failed to clear. As the ball bounced loose in the penalty area the veteran striker got down low to head home at the cost of a blow to the mouth.

He quickly recovered and in the 73rd minute broke down the left wing and delivered an inch-perfect cross, which Jordan volleyed home.

Picture:Shane Wenzlick www.phototek.co.nzDuring the first half the Bay's burly strike force of Jarrod Smith, Sam Messam and Jeremy Brockie toiled tirelessly but barely managed a shot on goal as Ki-Hyung Lee, Ben Sigmund and Greg Uhlmann harried them into error.

At the other end the chances came but went begging. In the 14th minute Coombes hit the outside of the post from a Bryan Little flick-on. Four minutes later Jimmy Cudd almost turned a Coombes shot into his own goal.

But the shot of the half was Jordan's 37-metre missile that hit the crossbar and bounced over.

Jordan and Jeff Campbell were wide with headers in the second spell and there were also chances for Paul Urlovic, who came on as a substitute for his 50th game, and Coombes.

The Bay's only real chance was a glanced header by Messam from a freekick conceded by Rupesh Puna at the edge of the penalty area. Goalie Tamati Williams defused the danger. Cole Peverley was the best of the Bay defenders until he went off with a leg injury.

Hawke's Bay will look to regain some momentum next Saturday when they host Youngheart Manawatu in their first home game, while Auckland travel to Carisbrook on Sunday to take on Otago United.
