Team Wellington looked out of sorts in the opening twenty minutes but as the inevitable defensive mistakes associated with this YoungHeart Manawatu side eventually revealed themselves so too did the game’s turning point.
Solomon Islands international Henry Fa’arodo scored his first ASB Premiership goal for Wellington when he rounded goalkeeper Ben Wilkes on seven minutes to open the scoring.
Then Luke Rowe doubled the advantage twenty minutes later after a mistake by Ben Wilkes and the writing looked more or less on the wall for Stu Jacobs’ beleaguered team.
YoungHeart Manawatu continued to show glimpses of competitiveness but collapsed in the second half conceding four goals.
Dakota Lucas extended Wellington’s lead six minutes after the restart to make it 3-0 before team-
mate Patrick Fleming scored with a tidy finish inside the penalty area on 61 minutes.
Only moments before Fleming’s strike, Manawatu had a Seule Soromon goal chalked off for offside, typical of the luck that has neglected the Palmerston North-based outfit this season.
Louis Fenton – named in the ASB Premiership Team of the Month for February – nabbed his eighth of the campaign five minutes later to make it 5-0.
Despite the score line, goalkeeper Phil Imray was kept busy by YoungHeart Manawatu with Michael McKnight testing the custodian from distance.
Eager to give his bench a hit out, Wellington coach Matt Calcott threw Dominic Rowe into the mix and the substitute marked his cameo with the visitor’s sixth goal five minutes from the end.
Suele Soromon completed a miserable afternoon for YoungHeart Manawatu when he was sent off for a reckless challenge on 87 minutes.
Manawatu stalwart Nathan Cooksley lamented the score line but made few excuses for his team’s performance.
He said: “We were outplayed and made silly mistakes that caused silly goals. The score line flattered them but we only have ourselves to blame.”
Team Wellington coach Matt Calcott delivered a cool assessment of his side’s first half.
“I was happy with second half but the first was a bit scratchy. Manawatu were competitive in the first 20 minutes and were very physical,” Calcott said, “But the second goal for us was a turning point and down to a goalkeeper error and that changed the feeling of the game. After that Team Wellington dictated the game and we looked like we wanted to play.”
Team Wellington finish off their regular season with the White Ribbon cup final on April 1 before they complete their regular season duties in the ASB Premiership with a home game with Hawke’s Bay United on April 8.
YoungHeart Manawatu finishes their season with an away trip to Fred Taylor Park in Whenuapai to take on Waitakere United.
With the West Aucklanders beaten by Canterbury United the Neil Emblen-coached outfit will now view the Round 14 fixture with the league’s easy beats without the casual attitude of an end of season stretch.
Manawatu look destined to finish the 2011-12 ASB Premiership season as the first to complete a regular season fixture list winless.
The previous worst season record was in 2005-06 season when Hawke’s Bay United won one, drew two and lost 18 of their 21 regular season matches.
