Auckland's Waitangi win extends league lead

Fergus Neil holds off Manel Exposito. www.photosport.co.nzAuckland City moved five points clear at that top of the ASB Premiership ladder this afternoon when they defeated Hawke’s Bay United 3-1 in Napier.

Auckland who came into the game as clear favourites, dominated for long periods of the match and no more so than in the opening 10 minutes. The visitors kept the ball from their opposition with crisp passing and intelligent interplay that had the Bay scrambling early on numerous occasions.

So it was a huge shock to the league leaders when the hosts took an unexpected lead after 15 minutes.

Good pressure from Stephen Hindmarch in the middle of the park resulted in Auckland giving the ball away and after Angel Berlanga brought Sam Margetts down on the edge of the box,  the impressive Conor Tinnion stepped up and struck a sweet left-footed curling shot into the top left hand corner of the net.

This seemed to spur on the home side and they gave as good as they got for the remainder of the half and would have taken an unexpected but deserved lead into the break had it not been for the controversial penalty decision by referee Nick Waldron.

The referee had no hesitations in awarding the penalty after he had adjudged Adam Cowan had tripped Andrew Milne after the Auckland defender had gone down from what looked like a clipping of his own ankles.

Emiliano Tade made no mistake from the spot and the sides retired to the dressing rooms all locked up at one a piece.

The second half couldn’t have started any worse for the home side when Manel Exposito turned his marker directly after the kick off and curled a well timed shot into Peta’s top right hand corner to give the visitors the lead for the first time.

Hawke’s Bay then looked to chase the game and coach Chris Greatholder emptied his bench in search of an equaliser.  But it wasn’t to be and Auckland City wrapped up all 3 points in the 87th minute when Tade drilled home his second penalty of the day after Exposito was brought down in the box by Bay keeper Shaun Peta.

Greatholder had mixed emotions about that match but kept positive after a very difficult weekend.

“It’s been a tough 48 hours,” Greatholder said. “All in all I am proud of the boys today.  They worked very hard”

“We were in the game for a long time today but Auckland are very professional in what they do and they kept the ball for long periods of the game.”

Auckland City’s Director of Football Aaron McFarland also lamented on how his side had kept the ball for long periods of the match and by doing this would in return create chances to win the match.

“Our boys were patient, and if they keep the ball for long enough then they will create chances to score goals and today we did”  McFarland said.

McFarland also paid tribute to the young Hawke’s Bay side and expressed admiration for their hard fought performance.

“You were organised and played well and caused us problems” McFarland said.  “If you can put together performances like today and get results like [your win over Waitakere] then this league will be interesting for the last few games,” he added.

Hawke’s Bay have the chance to get the ball rolling once again when they host Otago United this Sunday at Bluewater Stadium with the earlier kick off of 1pm.

12'  PETA called into action again as the Bay keeper gets a hand to a shot from CORRALES.  Fergus NEIL then is fouled when hooking the ball away from danger.

14'   YELLOW CARD Pressure form HINDMARCH results in a miss placed back pass and BERLANGA can only foul MARGETTS as he bares down on goal.

15'  GOAL From the resulting freekick Conor TINNION curls a peach into the top left hand corner leaving the keeper with no chance.

20' Hawke's Bay certainly have there backs up now and the home side looks to have gained alot of confidence from the earlier goal.

24' TADE beats Josh MARGETTS on the left and cuts the ball back but theres no one home for the league leaders.

26' TINNION picks the pocket of Chad COOMBES and tries a speculative shot from 30 yards which rolls wide of WILLIAMS left hand post.

38' YELLOW CARD CORRALES goes down easy in the box and it results in a booking.

42'  Goal mouth melee and the vistors can't capitalize.  PETA comes out and can't claim after earlier denying TADE.  The Auckland striker gets another chance but he can't find an open team mate and the chance goes begging.

50' YELLOW CARD TINNION picks up a booking for a soft challenge in the middle of the park.

53' BISS has a chance at the far post after good work by COWAN saw him float a dangerous cross in but the little midfielder can't repeat his goal scoring touch of late and he can only find the side netting.
