WELLINGTON - Waitakere United couldn’t be kept at bay by a Wellington side who fought hard, but eventually squandered a first half lead and went down 2-1 at Dave Farrington Park.

Waitakere started the better of the two, attacking promisingly down both flanks early on. Roy Krishna looked dangerous braking through a make shift Wellington back four, but Waitakere failed to get players on the end of his crosses.

Krishna then found himself with space after Waitakere worked a move to give him space on the right, but he couldn’t manage to keep his shot down.

The home side went in front just after the half-hour mark through a well-placed Patrick Fleming free kick which was arguably their first real chance of the game. Dakota Lucas was brought down on the edge of the box, and Fleming curled his effort around the wall into the bottom corner.

Waitakere, who couldn’t finish their first half chances, finally broke through after 59 minutes when a Jake Butler shot from outside the box deflected in off Wellington defender Tim Schaeffers. Phil Imray anticipating the original shot was left stranded in goal.

Fifteen minutes later a static Wellington defence didn’t deal with a Waitakere corner and found themselves behind. Luke Adams, who had just come off the bench, headed a corner back across goal into Alan Pearce’s path to make it 2-1.

Wellington had few chances to equalise, but their best chance of the second-half fell to Michael White two minutes from time. White found the ball at his feet inside the box, but his effort rolled around Robinson and agonizingly came back off the post.

Team Wellington Coach Matt Calcott was disappointed his side couldn’t hold onto the lead, and blamed a lack of focus.

“It was just a lapse in concentration again, which is something that has continued to haunt us. We’re starting to go for 70 minutes, but it’s just that 15-20 minute period when things aren’t going our way that are costing us” said Calcott.

Despite the result, Calcott did take positives from his side’s performance, and believes things look up.

“I’m proud of the lads; we had three first choice center backs out through either suspension or injury and the guys who have stepped in have done fantastic. It shows we are getting stronger and improving as a team” Calcott added.

Neil Emblen praised the way his side reacted to going behind, saying they showed a lot of character.

“It’s an excellent result. I thought we played well in the first half until Wellington scored. We just switched off for a minute and let Dakota turn and win a free-kick. Patrick finished it nicely, but after that point I thought we were in control.

Emblen liked what he saw in the first half despite going into the changing rooms a goal behind.

“I said to the lads keep playing the same way. I was pleased and it was just our final ball in the final third of the pitch that was missing. We managed to get back into the game and go on and win, which is great” said Emblen.

The result moves Waitakere top of the table with Auckland on 12 points, while Wellington now sits five points out of the playoff places with one game remaining before the Christmas break.

Overcast but warm here in Wellington for the visit of Waitakere.  The pitch took a bit of rain earlier in the week while the Olympic side were playing a Team Wellington invitation side but looks in pretty good nick from a distance.  A small crowd drifting in as we approach kick-off.

The officials resplendent in Purple are encouraging the squads to start on time.

We'll get the squads sorted as time allows.

0 Min

...and we're off.  The home side playing towards the school end of Farrington Field.

It's the visitors with the first shot though.  Bale hits a speculator from 30 yards but straight into the arms of Imray.  Then from a similar distance Holmes picks up on a badly controlled ball from Tim Myers but shoots well over.

3 Min

Krishna breaks wide left but his curling cross can't be met in the middle.  Wellington put it out for the corner.  From the corner Eager slices a clearance but Rowe on the far post hits it clear.

Krishna breaks the line again but Imray comes out to save at his feet.  Waitakere clearly dominant here early on.

4 Min

A close range cross is deflected out by Fleming for another corner.  Waitakere claim he used a hand but would have been harsh to see a penalty awarded.  Goood call from referee Kerr.

5 Min

Fenton breaks wide left for Team Wellington but his cross is easily cleared.  The new look Centre-Back pairing for Team Wellington looking a little shakey with Eager and Schaeffers.

7 Min

86 Min

Lucas through on a longball Adams defelects it and White gets on the end but Robinson is out quickly to save at their feet.

87 Min

Then at the other end de Vries breaks in a similar fashion and it's Imray out quickly to save.

We've got six minutes of extra time after the Scott injury.

92 Min

Referee Kerr blows the final whistle and it's all over.  A good effort from team Wellington's youngsters but in the end Waitakere deserved the threepoints.
