by Cameron Russell at David Farrington Park Krishna then found himself with space after Waitakere worked a move to give him space on the right, but he couldn’t manage to keep his shot down. The home side went in front just after the half-hour mark through a well-placed Patrick Fleming free kick which was arguably their first real chance of the game. Dakota Lucas was brought down on the edge of the box, and Fleming curled his effort around the wall into the bottom corner. Waitakere, who couldn’t finish their first half chances, finally broke through after 59 minutes when a Jake Butler shot from outside the box deflected in off Wellington defender Tim Schaeffers. Phil Imray anticipating the original shot was left stranded in goal. Fifteen minutes later a static Wellington defence didn’t deal with a Waitakere corner and found themselves behind. Luke Adams, who had just come off the bench, headed a corner back across goal into Alan Pearce’s path to make it 2-1. Wellington had few chances to equalise, but their best chance of the second-half fell to Michael White two minutes from time. White found the ball at his feet inside the box, but his effort rolled around Robinson and agonizingly came back off the post. Team Wellington Coach Matt Calcott was disappointed his side couldn’t hold onto the lead, and blamed a lack of focus. “It was just a lapse in concentration again, which is something that has continued to haunt us. We’re starting to go for 70 minutes, but it’s just that 15-20 minute period when things aren’t going our way that are costing us” said Calcott. Despite the result, Calcott did take positives from his side’s performance, and believes things look up. “I’m proud of the lads; we had three first choice center backs out through either suspension or injury and the guys who have stepped in have done fantastic. It shows we are getting stronger and improving as a team” Calcott added. Neil Emblen praised the way his side reacted to going behind, saying they showed a lot of character. “It’s an excellent result. I thought we played well in the first half until Wellington scored. We just switched off for a minute and let Dakota turn and win a free-kick. Patrick finished it nicely, but after that point I thought we were in control. Emblen liked what he saw in the first half despite going into the changing rooms a goal behind. “I said to the lads keep playing the same way. I was pleased and it was just our final ball in the final third of the pitch that was missing. We managed to get back into the game and go on and win, which is great” said Emblen. The result moves Waitakere top of the table with Auckland on 12 points, while Wellington now sits five points out of the playoff places with one game remaining before the Christmas break.
