Hawke's Bay United coach Jonathan Gould was all smiles after his side fought back from a goal down to open their NZFC campaign with a well deserved 3-1 win at Canterbury United on Sunday.

English debutant Dave Walker gave Canterbury a 1-0 lead at halftime but Hawke's Bay roared home with goals from Jeremy Brockie, Sam Messam and Leon Birnie.

We played some good football in the first half before going behind to a sucker punch late in the half, Gould said.

At half time I told the players not to panic because we were creating plenty of chances and I knew the goals would come if we continued to play the same way.

We were well worth the three points today and after last season it is good to start with a win.

Hawke's Bay clearly had the better of the scoring opportunities before Walker finished well to score his first NZFC goal and put the Canterbury ahead, against the run of pay three minutes before the break.

Into the second half, Hawke's Bay again were the more creative and with some Canterbury players allowing their markers too much space, it was only a matter of time before the scores were level.

It was former Canterbury player Brockie who was untroubled to equalise after Canterbury failed to clear the ball with 20-minutes remaining.

Less than 10 minutes later Hawke's Bay took the lead when Messam scored after Canterbury failed to clear the ball.

Birnie ensured the visitors would head north with the three points when firing home a shot in front of goal from just outside the penalty area.

While the result was not what Canterbury fans wanted, seven Dragons starters were making their NZFC debut with another two players, Michael Fifii and Ryan Faichnie, also debuting off the bench.

Canterbury will have both their captain, Stu Kelly, and vice captain, Andy Pitman, back for their round two visit to Otago United next Sunday after both were servicing a suspension carried over from last season.

Hawke's Bay are away to Auckland City on Saturday.
