Derby day delights keeps Dragons in playoff chase

CHRISTCHURCH - Canterbury United kept their slim ASB Premiership play-off hopes alive with a comfortable 3-1 win over their mainland rivals Otago United in Christchurch today.

The home side dominated the match for long spells, but had to wait to virtually right on half time before they finally scored.

An Aaron Clapham free-kick was not cleared by the Otago defence, and young academy player Sam Miles reacted quickest, squeezing a shot home, from close in, despite a valiant parried save from Otago keeper Adam Highfield.

Before then, Canterbury had created numerous opportunities with winger Gagame Feni  a constant menace. The Solomon Islander never gave the visitors defence any downtime with his probing, mazy runs from all over the field.

He would have scored at least twice himself, had it not been for the reflexes of Highfield in the Otago goal.

After the break, the one-way traffic towards the Otago goal continued. Within five minutes of the restart Otago full-back Tom Sadd lost possession inside his own box, and Dragons' top scorer Russell Kamo nipped in before Highfield could respond, to net his eighth goal of the season.

There seemed no way back for Otago and the home faithful sensed the flood gates could open. However, and not for the first time this season, the Dragons' managed to invite the opposition back into the game.

From a rare Otago foray and corner, Dragons' midfield pivot Glen Collins scored an own goal- after looping a header into the top far corner past the redundant Tom Batty.

The goal definitely had an element of misfortune about it. Otago had never looked like scoring, and Collins had barely put a foot wrong in the whole game.

Not long after, Dragons' coach Keith Braithwaite replaced the impressive  Sam Miles with Joe Murray. It proved a good decision. Within a few minutes of entering the fray, Murray scored from deep inside the Otago box. After he found himself on the end of another mazy run from Gagame Feni.

Later, Dragons skipper Dan Terris, playing in his 100th game, nearly got in on the act with a speculative drive, which just whistled by from around 20 yards out. It did not matter.

Afterwards, a disappointed Otago coach, Malcolm Fleming, conceded there was only one team that had turned up . If you don't cherish the ball, you can't expect to win. Every time we got to the last third of the field we gave it up.

Fleming also lamented the discipline of his team. We had far too many stupid bookings in that first half. It's all very well saying sorry, but you have to get your head down and keep playing. It was just so frustrating today.

Dragons' coach, Keith Braithwaite meanwhile, was delighted with side's overall performance. It was great team effort. We just wanted to make sure we got three points today. I thought Highfield (Otago keeper) kept them in it. We were deserved winners today.

Best for Canterbury, the busy Gagame Feni, while in the middle, the industry of Aaron Clapham and Glen Collins was tireless. Young Sam Miles deserves a mention too, capping a lively performance with a vital goal.

For Otago, Andy Coburn put in an honest shift in his last ever game. While keeper Adam Highfield stood tall preventing an embarrassing defeat for the visitors.

Welcome to Linfield Park in East Christchurch, for what could be the last time this season. And what a way to finish- a South Island derby match with Canterbury and Otago. Both sides are still in play-off contention, so this game should be anything but an end of season yawn. Going by the form-book the  outcome is to hard to call-expect a roller-coaster ride with plenty of goalmouth action. Conditions are fine though breezy-temperature around 21 degrees. Late news: word is Nathan Knox, a shock inclusion in Otago Squad, could make an appearance at some stage.

1' Good lively start, Sam Miles shoots just over from edge of box. Corner for Canty follows comes to nothing.

26'James Reichwein for Otago almost gets a header on goal 6 yards out but it drifts wide.

28'Jeremy Wild tries a speculative shot 25 yards out at goal just to high, and Highfield is relieved

29'Feni again tormenting Otago defence. He moves inside the box of the wing and shoots just over the bar.

39'CLapham puts in a dangerous cross but it is cleared comfortably by Otago central defence.

41'Otago certainly competing in midfield areas but are lacking a genuine goal threat in the last third of the field.

44'GOAL Canty Clapham freekick is not cleared in the centre of Otago box, Miles seizes the moment controls the ball and turns his shot towards goal-it is almost held by Highfield but it crosses the line -just! inside  the far post.
