McIvor snatches last gasp win for Hawke's Bay

by Andrew Bailey at Memorial Park

PALMERSTON NORTH – Hawke’s Bay United player-coach Chris McIvor was the hero as he snatched a winner at the death in an entertaining derby full of drama at Palmerston North this afternoon.

This fixture is traditionally tight with plenty of excitement: late action is often a good bet and it proved so today.

Both sides started quickly and there was plenty of pace in the first fifteen minutes. Hayne got the home side started with a great run down the right.

He beat two Hawke’s Bay players on his way to the byline but Josh Chettleburgh couldn’t find a clean strike on the cut back.

Hawke’s Bay recovered to enjoy a good spell in the middle of the first half as they warmed to their task. Just as you felt the visitors might be the first to score, YoungHeart very nearly did.

Academy player Dale Higham picked up a loose ball and drove towards goal. He flicked it out to Hayne and Gillespie had to be out quickly to half smother his shot past the near post.

It was a warning for the Bay and chances began to flow thick and fast in the last ten minutes of the half.
Andy Bevin pounced on a loose ball in the box after Birnie had an air swing but Falvey blocked well.

Bevin popped up again moments later for an even better chance but he didn’t quite get a hold of his strike and it was held by Manawatu keeper Matt Borren.

Half time came with the two sides inseparable.

The second half started with a little bit of niggle and it quickly escalated with both sides racking up the yellow cards.

Michael White had looked bright for YoungHeart all day and he was inches from putting the home side ahead in the 70th minute. Higham flicked through a long clearance and White’s pace took him the rest of the way.

His left footed strike from just inside the area on the angle crashed back off the far post.

The home fans were soon up off their seats again. Cole Peverley flew into a challenge on Jason Hayne and earned himself a second yellow card. A frantic finish beckoned with fifteen minutes remaining.

Dan O’Brien thought he’d broken the dead lock for the visitors with his free kick around the wall, but Borren saved well at full stretch.

YoungHeart joined Hawke’s Bay on ten men moments later as White was dismissed for his second yellow for a challenge on Jonathan Taylor.

The game was still end to end and Borren saved Manawatu again in the last minute with a great point blank save against Birnie after some last ditch defence.

Then Hawke’s Bay veteran Chris McIvor popped up to give the game the only thing it was missing. Dan O’Brien floated a pinpoint cross from the left and McIvor buried a superb header in the bottom corner to snatch an extra time victory.

Hawkes Bay coach Matt Chandler was proud of the nature of the win.

“I thought we preservered. A couple of seasons ago up here when I was assistant with Jonathan Gould Che Bunce scored at the end like that, too. I thought we deserved a goal.”

Chandler was also pleased with his substitution.

“We changed things up front a little bit and I thought we needed some fresh legs and he [substitute Chris McIvor] got the goal.”

Bob Sova was understandably disappointed to lose such a tight game at the death.

“Hawke's Bay might have shaded it territorially but I didn’t think there was much in it. We’re probably a little bit underdone match fitness-wise but to concede like’s a point lost.”

YoungHeart will now have to visit a Canterbury United side fresh from knocking four in against Wellington, while Hawke’s Bay will return home with their three points to take on Otago United at Park Island next week.

Play by Play

Welcome to a warm Memorial Park for YoungHeart Manawatu's first game of the season. Always a sense of the unknown on the first game of the season; Hawkes Bay have the advantage of having played last week in a loss to Waitakere.

2' We're underway and Leon Birnie introduces himself to Matt Kennedy by crunching him from behind. Kennedy's back up and the referee has words with Birnie.

4' Michael White gets in a cross on his left and Hawkes Bay manage to scramble it behind for the first corner of the game. Gillespie manages to deal with it.

8' Chettleburgh and Ishi dispossess Peverley in the middle of the park and break. Michael White plays in academy player Dale Higham but Doran is too strong for him.

10' Pretty even in the first ten but there should be goals in this one.

11' Fantastic run by Hayne down the right. Gets a decent cross in to Chettleburgh but his side foot finish is mistimed and the Bay scramble clear.

13' Hawkes Bay with a free kick in a decent area. Dan O'Brien finds a dangerous ball and Birnie is steaming in the far post but YoungHeart deal with it and concede a corner.

16' Corner to Hawkes Bay as Colin Falvey blocks off Birnie's way to goal.

17' Brave header clear by Cooksley under pressure at the near post. YoungHeart break through White and Chettleburgh might have had the chance to shoot but leaves it for Hayne who cuts back on his left and the chance is lost.

20' Ishi robs it in a dangerous area but his cross is too big for Chettleburgh and Higham in the middle. YoungHeart are winning the ball high up the pitch too often for the Bay's liking.

25' Hawke's Bay enjoying a little spell of possession here but still very even. The home side have probably shaded it in terms of chances here in the first 25.

29' The crowd get something to cheer about as YoungHeart push forwards from a corner. White gets a strike on goal from a great position inside the box but he drags it wide.

31' Joachim Rande has been quiet for the visitors so far but he picks the ball up and has a go on his left but he too drags it wide. Borren was never worried.

33' Fantastic ball by Leon Birnie. He spots Dan O'Brien centrally and finds him with a disguised pass, but O'Brien's touch is too heavy and it runs through to Borren. Better chance than it looked.

35' Rande heads over at the far post from a tough chance. The Bay have had the better of the last 15 and are starting to look dangerous.

36' Just as I say that YoungHeart go very close! Dale Highim picked up a loose ball and found a good ball to Hayne at the far post. Gillespie was out quickly and got enough on it to divert the ball into the side netting. Corner YoungHeart.

38' Chances everywhere now. O'Brien floats in a cross on his left and Leon Birnie has an air swing for the Bay. Andy Bevin comes in on the loose ball and Falvey somehow gets a block in.

44' Good chance for the Bay. Andy Bevin twists and turns in the box to half get away from Cowan but Borren makes a decent save and holds it, too.

46' Ball gets switched to Dan O'Brien and he stands up a decent cross to the far post. Birnie heads back across goal well and Andy Bevin somehow completely misses the ball with the goal opening. The flag goes up to partially spare his blushes.

Halftime here at Memorial. Good half for the neutral, plenty of to and fro and some decent chances, too. You'd think it won't stay goalless for the whole 90. I'll be back in 15!

And we're back. Doesn't look like there are going to be any changes. The weather's cooling down a bit here now.

47' Graham Craven gets hacked down by Birnie in a pretty bad looking challenge.

48' SUB Craven's had to be withdrawn for 11. Hamish McKay. McKay will go to right back and Cowan will come inside to form a centre back partnership with Falvey.

55' Peverley floats a good switch to Andy Bevin who skips around Cooksley and gets a left footed shot off. Borren makes a comfortable save at his near post.

56'  Michael White and Bill Robertson go in the book.

59'  Peverley joins them for hacking down Hayne.

60' Michael White wins a free kick in a good position. Bay bench not happy.

60' Five in the wall and they manage to block Hayne's strike.

61' Rande tries to cut inside Falvey for a right footed strike but he's well stood up by the Manawatu centre back and the chance is snuffed out.

64' The Bay get a free kick from a similar position as YoungHeart's earlier. Good strike by Peverley but straight at Borren and the Manawatu keeper holds onto it.

65'  Terrible challenge by Hamish McKay on Phil Doran right in front of the Bay bench. The purple clad referee is in quickly brandishing a yellow card.

67'  Jonathan Taylor gets in on the action.

68'  Matt Kennedy strikes back for Manawatu. Referee will want to keep control here.

70' Borren goes long and Higham flicks it on for White who bursts through. Great strike on his left but it comes crashing off the upright with Gillespie beaten.

71' Hawkes Bay with a chance at the other end but Manawatu do enough.

73'  Second yellow for Peverley! Looked to have hacked down Hayne but difficult to see how bad it was from here. Not the challenge he needs to be making when already on a card, though.

78' YoungHeart pressing now. Hayne gets to the byline well and clips a floating ball far post but Marama Thompson is there to deal with it. Behind for a corner.

78' 2. Ishi is off for 22. Greg O'Connor for YoungHeart.

78' Hawke's Bay follow suit and withdraw 15. Joachim Rande for 20. Chris McIvor.

80' Josh Chettleburgh steals the ball high up the pitch and looks like he's in on goal. He plays in Higham but his touch lets him down.

80' Free kick to Hawke's Bay just outside the box. Dan O'Brien goes around the wall and Matt Borren saves at full stretch. Really good stop.

82' Bad challenge by Michael White on Jonathan Taylor. He gets his second yellow and can have no complaints.

85' Franctic finish here at Memorial Park. Both sides down to ten and they'll both feel they could nick it at the end. Still end to end.

87' McIvor through, thought he'd lifted it over Borren but the keeper does well to recover.

89' Somehow Hawke's Bay don't score! Borren spreads himself in front of Birnie when he thought he'd scored. Two or three last ditch challenges in the box leading up to that save. Both benches frantic.

90' We're going to have four minutes extra time here.

90' Goal! Late drama here in a game that's had everything. Superb far post cross by Dan O'Brien finds Hawke's Bay stalwart Chris McIvor. Text book header back across goal into the bottom corner.

It's all over! Plenty of excitement for the neutral with chances and cards flying everywhere. The home fans will go home disappointed as Hawke's Bay snatched it at the death. That's all from me right now, I'll be back with a match report soon.
