The home side had plenty of reason to be optimistic parading new signings Dan O’Brien, Marvin Eakins, Phil Doran and Cole Peverley. The reintroduction of Bill Robertson, who missed most of last season after a horrorific leg break, simply underlined Hawke’s Bay’s positivity. The Bay’s earnest attitude received a withering riposte when Allan Pearce steered a Martin Bullock freekick beyond goalkeeper Richard Gillespie to hand the defending champions barely with 120 seconds of the match played. Hawke’s Bay responded with a performance filled with industry but their labours failed to produce a clear cut goal scoring chance. Waitakere United have shown they are at their most dangerous when under pressure and Roy Krishna illustrated the point when he doubled the visitors lead after his angled shot beat goalkeeper Richard Gillespie on 17 minutes. Hawke’s Bay enjoyed their best spell of the second half shortly after the half hour mark with first Jarrod Smith then debutant Marvin Eakins forcing saves from Andy Ralph. The home side’s task grew more difficult when star striker Smith was removed following a collision with Martin Bullock that left the former Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders front man dazed. Smith’s departure on halftime left Hawke’s Bay vulnerable in attack but it was in defence where they were exposed just two minutes after the restart. Roy Krishna’s exciting fast break and quality cross found Pearce lurking in the Hawke’s Bay penalty area and the Waitakere stalwart made it 3-0 with a tidy finish on 47 minutes. Hawke’s Bay players frustrations boiled over and referee Chris Kerr issued a spate of cautions with Bill Robertson, Cole Peverley, Jonathan Taylor and Phil Doran amongst the throng of offenders. The home side were not to be denied a goal for their efforts. With ten minutes left substitute Andy Bevin sent Leon Birnie away who tapped in from close range, the striker completing his 60th ASB Premiership career appearance with his 29th goal. The injection of Chris McIvor sixty seconds after Hawke’s Bay goal nearly resulted in a second for the home side but for the handiwork of Andy Ralph. Waitakere United rode out the remainder of the match to claim a comfortable 3-1 victory. Hawke's Bay United coach Matt Chandler lamented the early loss of Jarrod Smith but expressed pleasure at he performance of two of his younger charges. "It was obviously a big blow losing Jarrod but that's just something we have to deal with," Chandler said,"But Marama Thompson was outstanding all day and didn't put a foot wrong. Andy Bevin played a full ninety minutes yesterday but made a big impact when he came on." Chandler's opposite Neil Emblen was generous in his praise for Hawke's Bay United's efforts but paid tribute to the quality of his own team's performance. "It's tough for Hawke's Bay, we've played three games already," Emblen said, "Today was a potential hurdle but we were outstanding." It is the champions second ASB Premiership win on the trot and their third competitive victory in a row including their come from behind 3-1 over Tahitian champions AS Tefana in the OFC Champions League last weekend. |

0' | Wecome to Park Island for this Round 1 ASB Premiership fixture between HB United and Waitakere United. The early morning showers have moved on and the typical HB sun is out. Saying that the players now have a swirling wind to contend with. |
2' |
|
5' | Hawkes Bay under a little Waitakere pressure but manage to clear a whipped in PEARCE cross which is swung onto the edge of the 6 yard. |
8' | Waitakere definately have started the sharper of the 2 sides and obviously the 2 earlier games have put them in good stead |
15' | Game just flowing from end to end now really but HB seem to be getting alot more touches on the ball |
16' | The ever so tenacious PEVERLEY goes in hard with a tackle on MYERS and lets him know hes in for a match |
17' |
|
20' | PEARCE directs a Waitekere corner wayward as HB seem to be a little shell shocked |
21' | BIRNIE gets on the end of a long ball but RALPH comes of his line well and the ball is cleared for a rare HB corner |
28' | Waitakere are keeping the pressure on HB and seem to be getting alot of joy down the flanks. Another cross is wipped in but GILLISPIE is off his line sharply off his line to collect |
30' | HB's best chance of the game has come and unfortunately for the strong 650 home crowd has also gone with no reward. PEVERLEY does well and drives a cross in which is chested down by ROWLEY but only into the path of SMITH who cant beat RALPH in the Waitakere goal |
35' | An EAKINS snapshot from the edge of the box is smothered by the Waitakere keeper |
37' | Waitakere keep the pressure on and KRISHNA follows suit with a dangerous cross that flys across Hawkes Bays penalty area after he got clear down the right wing. |
40' | GILLISPIE takes a free kick inside his own half and puts it on the penalty spot only for a desperate Waitakere defender to clear it for a corner |
41' | The resulting corner is a great delivery by DORAN but no Hawkes Bay players can get on the end of it |
44' | SMITH goes down heavily in a challenge which consisted of PEVERLEY, BULLOCK and himself. He dosnt look very good at all and i cant see him returning to the field as he helped down the tunnel. HB looks like they will play out the half with 10 men and Matt CHANDLER will make his decision at the break |
45' | The fourth official holds up 1 minute of additional time |
46' | HALF TIME here at Park Island and Waitakere lead the hosts by 2 goals to nil. HALF TIME: WAITAKERE 2 HAWKES BAY 0 |
While we have the chance i like to give a huge shout out to our International viewers. Especially former Hawkes Bay players FYFE, HENSLEE, SIMMONDS and DUNN who are following the action from across the ditch.
46' | #12 Andy BEVIN replaces #23 Jared SMITH for HB |
47' |
|
48' |
|
50' | GILLISPIE makes a supurb double save, firstly off a well driven KRISHNA shot which he paries and then from PEARCE which GILLISPIE manages to turn around the post for another Waitakere corner |
57' |
|
60' | Waitakere corner again and again GILLISPIE shows his domination in the air collecting well, before being up ended, which results in a HB free kick |
62' | subsitute for Waitakere sees #13 Mike GWYTHER on for #20 Ryan DE VRIES |
63' |
|
70' | Hawkes Bay have a huge appeal for hand ball inside the box but KERR waves it away |
76' | Subsitute for Waitakere #10 PEARCE off for #19 LUCAS |
80' |
|
81' | Subsitutes HB #20 Chris McIVOR on for #10 Dan O'BRIEN & Waitakere #26 LOVEMORE replaces # 12 KRISHNA |
85' | McIVOR has instant involvment as his teasing cross is claimed bu the keeper |
87' | Waitakere have the ball in the net again but this time its ruled out for offside.
|
90' | Fourth official shows 3 minutes of additional time |
93' | FULL TIME Waitakere 3 Hawkes Bay 1 |
Its all over here at Bluewater stadium with Waitakere coming away with the points after defeating HB 3 goals to 1. 2 early goals in each half from Alan PEARCE took the sting out of HB and the home side never really gathered their feet. From Park Island this is goodbye for now!!
